Of this year's 12 Lex Mathews Scholarship winners, three are from All Saints' Episcopal Church in Hamlet. Kathy, 50, is divorced and assisting with raising her two grandchildren, one of whom is disabled. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society this past Spring and hopes to graduate with an associate's degree this Fall from Richmond Community College, then continue studies for a bachelor's degree in music education at UNC-Pembroke. Her plans are to work in the field of music therapy for disabled chldren.
Kim, 31, is married and has a preschool age child. She will be transferring to UNC-Pembroke to finish her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a focus in art education, hoping to graduate in 2009. She is also an artist, creating jewelry for local craft fairs.
Gina, 48, is divorced and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society this Spring, in her first semester of school. She is majoring in human services at Richmond Community College and hopes to work with at-risk children and single mothers.
