About the Speaker

Summary of My Personal Involvement in ECW and UTO

by Darrell Powell

Diocese of Olympia, WA - Province VIII

1995 Chaplin on the Diocesan ECW Board
1997 Vice-President of the Diocesan ECW Board: Organized various retreats and workshops for the women of the diocese. Delegate to Triennial for ECW
1998 President of the Diocesan ECW Board
2000 & 2003 Delegate to Triennial for ECW
2005 Diocesan ECW Board is disbanded. I met with Bishop Vincent Warner and explained that over the past few years, fewer and fewer women were participating in the workshops and activities sponsored by the Board, making it necessary to cancel many planned activities. He was very sympathetic and recognized that the founding goal of ECW, to give women a role and purpose in the life of their parish, was no longer viable, expecially now that we had women clergy and women bishops. After a long conversation, the bishop give his approval to disband.

Diocese of Pittsburgh, PA - Province III

2012 Vice-President of the Diocesan ECW Board (After retiring from teaching, I moved back to my original hometown outside Pittsburgh.) Delegate to Triennial for ECW
2013 Diocesan UTO Coordinator
2015 Delegate to Triennial for UTO
2018 Delegate to Triennial for UTO
I was awarded the “Promise Cross” from the National UTO Board President, Heather Melton, in recognition that the Diocese of Pittsburgh was the only diocese to increase their ingathering giving each year of the triennial.
2022 Moved to Durham, NC

With God’s help as UTO Coordinator, my goals are:

  • Establish a personal relationship with each parish of the diocese

  • Foster, in each parish, a sense of overflowing gratitude for all the blessings, big and little, that God gives each of us every day

  • Show how to express that gratitude to others in our parishes and communities

  • Explain the importance of sharing one’s gratitude by putting a coin(s) into the UTO Gratitude Boxes (Those little blue boxes are a great reminder to say “Thanks” to God)

  • Foster enthusiasm with each UTO Ingathering giving donation
